Why NYT paywalls get in the way
The Times often blurs the story body, adds a sticky overlay, and locks scrolling after a few paragraphs. Removing those layers restores the article view for pages you can already access (free reads or as a subscriber) without breaking the typography.
ClickRemix recipe to clear NYT paywalls
- Prompt: "Remove any blur or backdrop filter from the article body; disable overflow hidden or fixed overlays blocking scroll."
- Add: "Hide elements with ids or classes containing 'gateway', 'paywall', or 'expanded-dock'; keep the article text full opacity."
- Ask: "Ensure the main story container remains max-width 680–720px for readability; keep pull quotes and captions aligned."
- Save as "NYT Open Read" to reuse whenever the overlay reappears.
NYT-specific selectors
-
Target and hide
.gateway-contentand#app > div[aria-label="overlay"]to clear the modal. -
Remove blur on
.css-1fanzo5or.story-bodyby resettingfilterandopacity. -
Set
body { overflow: auto !important; }to restore scroll if it's locked.
If the page still locks
Some articles add a transparent blocking div. Ask ClickRemix to "remove
any fixed elements covering the viewport; allow pointer events on the
article container." If images fade, set their opacity to 1 and remove
filter: blur() on figure tags.
Keep NYT typography intact
- Preserve the classic NYT serif by keeping headings bold and the body at ~19px with 1.6 line-height so columns stay comfortable.
- Maintain the narrow column width and avoid stretching images beyond their container to keep captions aligned.
- If the top nav collapses after clearing the paywall, lock it to a clean white background with a subtle divider to match the default look.
