Why Medium needs a readability tune-up
Medium stories often use tight line-height and inject a translucent overlay for the metered paywall. A few tweaks keep the serif text crisp, while removing the fog that interrupts scrolling.
ClickRemix recipe for Medium
- Prompt: "Increase line-height to 1.7; bump paragraph font size by 1–2px; keep headings bold but not oversized."
- Add: "Remove paywall overlays and any blur; keep the body full opacity and allow scrolling."
- Ask: "Keep max width around 720px; ensure code blocks and pull quotes stay readable on dark and light backgrounds."
- Save as "Medium Readable" for every story.
Selectors to target
-
Hide
[data-testid="paywall-meter-background"],.as-overlay, and.u-overflowHidden. -
Reset filters on
articleand.meteredContentto remove blur or opacity. -
Force scroll with
html, body { overflow: auto !important; }if locked.
If images stay dim
Ask ClickRemix to "set all figure img opacity to 1 and
remove filter on ancestors." Keep captions at 90% opacity
so they remain secondary.
Typography tuning options
-
Swap the body font to a humanist sans like Inter or keep the serif,
but raise
letter-spacingslightly for easier skimming. - Set code blocks to a mono font with a subtle background; keep line length under 80 characters for readability.
- Add gentle link underlines so hyperlinks are visible in both light and dark themes.
If the paywall meter lingers
Medium sometimes dims the page after a few scrolls. Ask ClickRemix to
"continuously hide elements matching 'meter' or 'paywall' in ids/classes
and keep article opacity at 1." If scroll locks again,
reapply overflow: auto !important; on html, body.
